Concert poster collector Scott Mussell is seeking original posters, flyers and handbills from Nirvana's back-to-back Georgia shows in October 1991: Saturday, Oct. 5 at the 40 Watt Club in Athens and Sunday, Oct. 6 at The Masquerade in Atlanta. Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl played both dates less than two weeks after Nevermind was released on Sept. 24, 1991.

"The Athens show got really reckless," Mussell says. During the closing "Endless, Nameless," Cobain crowd-surfed with his guitar and pulled the club's movie screen down from the ceiling, fans rushed the stage, and Grohl kicked over his drum kit. "The band smashed all of its gear and left it in a pile on the stage," Mussell adds. "I've never seen a poster for this show, but given the club's grassroots, do-it-yourself approach, it seems likely something was made." He is also interested in handbills, ticket stubs and original newspaper ads for the show.

The Atlanta show, with Das Damen opening, produced the better-known poster: a large photo of the band at center under "the Masquerade presents," with "Sun., Oct. 6, $7.50 adv." and Ticketmaster outlets at the bottom. "It's on yellow paper and has all the hallmarks: venue at top, ticket info at bottom and a big image of the band. It's a real winner," Mussell explains. "It's on my want list for sure. It's important to preserve this kind of pop culture history."

Mussell will make a generous offer upon inspection for original examples from either show, in any condition, for his archive of more than 90 pre-1992 Nirvana concert posters. Contact him anytime at 515-707-7250 (call or text) or srmussell@me.com.
